Major Changes in The Million Club of Finnish Artists

The million-strong club of Finnish artists and music creators has seen significant changes this summer. Back in May, there were a total of 21 artists in Finland with monthly listeners exceeding the million mark on Spotify. Now there are only sixteen of them.

Finland's Eurovision representatives KAJ, Pete Parkkonen and Linda Lampenius, as well as EDM artists YES YES and Skorde, have all fallen below the million monthly listener mark. Parkkonen's and Lampenius' listeners have dropped the most, from over a million to around half a million.

The most listened-to Finnish artist in the world is still phonk-style DJ FKU, whose popularity is indeed declining. In May, he had 6.69 million monthly Spotify listeners, but now only 5.02 million. HIM (4.82 million) has taken second place, overtaking Darude (4.73 million) in third place.

The Rasmus (3.45 million) is the fourth to surpass the million monthly Spotify listener mark, followed by Apocalyptica (2.94 million), Nightwish (2.72 million), Robbe (2.50 million), EBEN (2.44 million), Bomfunk MC’s (1.91 million) and Käärijä (1.47 million).

– Eurovision seems to be driving a significant increase in the number of artists listening, but the increase does not seem to be permanent, as Parkkonen and Lampenius’ figures show. KAJ has also experienced a clear drop from 1.2 million in May to a current 850,000, says Tomi Lindblom, who maintains the million list on the Luxonia music website.

Another significant change in popularity seems to have been for phonk music artists during the summer.

– In addition to DJ FKU, among Finnish phonk producers, OXXED has also experienced a clear drop, with monthly listeners dropping from 1.56 million in May to 1.05 million. DJ FKU's other artist name, Skorde, has also dropped off the million-list altogether (1.46 million in May, now just under 990,000), Lindblom says.
