EDM recently gained a lot of visibility on the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yle Radio Finland and online. Yle published an extensive article about the development and current state of EDM, interviewing veterans and newcomers in the field.
"EDM began to develop in the 1980s in the footsteps of disco and funk. Despite occasional breaks in the mainstream, it has always maintained its presence as a subculture," the article says.
- People understand EDM in so many ways. Sometimes I don't even know what it means. It would be fun to give it a new definition, said Martin Karm in his interview.
DJ Orkidea, aka Tapio Hakanen, feels that EDM has entered the mainstream three times. He also closely follows the development of cultures in his day job as music manager at YleX, the article states.
- The post-corona scene has a lot in common with the one I joined in the 90s, Hakanen says.
